Precision Manufacturing Process & Core Production Technology for Excavator Bucket Shafts (Pins)

 
As the core hinged load-bearing component of construction machinery working devices, excavator bucket shafts endure severe working conditions such as high-frequency impact, alternating loads, and heavy-duty friction. Their manufacturing process directly determines the connection reliability, wear-resistant service life, and operational stability of the entire machine. The following is a standardized, high-precision, and high-reliability full-process precision manufacturing system for bucket shafts.
 

I. Raw Material Selection & Pre-treatment

 

High-quality alloy structural steels (40Cr, 45# carbon steel, etc.) are adopted as base materials.

 

Upon incoming inspection, raw materials undergo spectral composition analysis and ultrasonic non-destructive testing to eliminate internal defects such as cracks, porosity, and inclusions, ensuring consistent mechanical properties from the source.

 
High-precision circular sawing machines are used for fixed-length cutting according to design dimensions, producing flat, burr-free end faces to provide a stable reference for subsequent machining.
 

II. CNC Rough Machining & Forming

 
CNC lathes are used to perform integrated rough turning of the blank, including outer diameter, end face, steps, and chamfers, removing most machining allowance and unifying the external reference.
 
Concentricity and geometric tolerances are strictly controlled during processing, with reasonable allowances reserved for heat treatment and finishing, ensuring stable dimensions and controllable deformation in subsequent processes.
 

III. Quenching & Tempering Heat Treatment (Core Strengthening & Toughening Process)

 
Rough-machined parts undergo overall quenching and tempering (quenching + high-temperature tempering) to achieve uniform and stable comprehensive mechanical properties.
 
After quenching and tempering, the core hardness reaches HB 260–320, delivering high strength, high toughness, fatigue resistance, and fracture resistance. This enables the shaft to withstand heavy impact conditions such as excavation and breaking, eliminating risks of bending or fracture during service.
 

IV. Semi-finish Turning & Reference Finishing

 

Using the center hole as the precision positioning reference, CNC semi-finish turning is performed to refine the outer diameter, end face, shaft shoulders, and mounting areas.

 

This ensures key geometric accuracies including concentricity and perpendicularity, laying a foundation for surface strengthening and final grinding.

 

V. Precision Hole Machining

 
CNC drilling machines or machining centers are employed to machine precision hole systems, including axial center oil holes, radial lubrication oil holes, end lock plate holes, and circlip grooves.
 
Holes are accurately positioned with smooth inner walls, ensuring unobstructed lubrication and reliable locking. This effectively reduces wear and temperature rise at hinged joints, extending the service life of bushings and the shaft body.
 

VI. High-Frequency Induction Hardening (Wear Resistance Strengthening Process)

 
Local high-frequency induction hardening is applied to the working friction surfaces of the shaft, achieving rapid austenitization and instantaneous hardening of the surface layer.
 
The hardened layer depth is controlled at 1.5–3.0 mm, with surface hardness reaching HRC 55–62, forming an ideal structure of a hard, wear-resistant outer layer and a tough, impact-resistant core. This significantly improves wear resistance, scratch resistance, and fatigue life.
 

VII. High-Precision Cylindrical Grinding

 
CNC cylindrical grinders are used for finish grinding, with diameter tolerances strictly controlled to ±0.01–0.02 mm, ensuring cylindricity, roundness, and surface roughness meet precision fitting requirements.
 
The ground shaft surface features high finish and consistent dimensional accuracy, achieving optimal clearance fit with bushings and reducing noise, eccentric wear, and seizing.
 

VIII. Mirror Polishing & Precision Finishing

 

Ultra-precision polishing is performed on key fitting surfaces, achieving surface roughness of Ra ≤ 0.4 μm (mirror finish).

 

This further reduces the friction coefficient, improves lubrication efficiency, and delays component aging.

 

IX. End Structure Forming & Welding Strengthening

 

According to machine model requirements, automatic welding is applied to shaft ends for retaining rings, flanges, or positioning ends.

 

Post-weld stress relief annealing and grinding are conducted to ensure high welding strength and smooth appearance, eliminating risks of incomplete fusion or cracking.

 

X. Surface Protection Treatment

 

Multiple anti-corrosion processes are applied based on service environments, including blackening, phosphating, electrostatic spraying, and anti-rust oil dipping.

 

This improves weather resistance and corrosion resistance, meeting anti-rust requirements for storage, transportation, and field operation.

 

XI. Full-Dimension Finished Product Inspection & Factory Quality Control

 
An integrated inspection system is implemented covering dimensional accuracy, hardness testing, non-destructive testing, geometric tolerances, and surface quality. Mechanical properties are sampled and tested batch by batch to ensure every product meets design standards and heavy-duty service requirements for construction machinery.
 

XII. Standardized Packaging & Warehousing

 

Finished products are sealed with anti-rust protection and fitted with end protectors before standardized packing.

 

This provides moisture-proof, collision-proof, and scratch-proof protection, ensuring intact delivery condition.

The hardness will only be too high, so there will be a situation where the shaft is not wear-resistant but the service life is not long
